The article deals with the role of the basic proper names, namely anthroponyms, in the metonymic transformations based on the English publicistic texts of the modern mass media. There are analyzed the kinds of the metonymic relations between the origin and derived meanings of the proper names: 1) chief of state, country, government, institution - state, country, institution, people; 2) figure - period; 3) figure (his name) - product of his activities.
