The article presents literature data on the physiological role of iron, the main features of its metabolism in the human body, factors affecting the processes of assimilation of this vital trace element. Attention is focused on the urgency of the problem of insufficient iron supply to the athletes' body in conditions of intense training and competitive loads. It is noted that iron deficiency in the body is a significant factor that has a negative impact on adaptive capabilities, physical performance, the health of athletes and their sports results. To prevent iron deficiency conditions in athletes, it is necessary to correct diets with an increase in the proportion of foods rich in iron, and the use of vitamin and mineral complexes. For the treatment of anemia in athletes, it is necessary to take pharmacological iron preparations. At the same time, iron preparations can be used only as prescribed by a doctor after laboratory confirmation of the presence of iron deficiency anemia.
