The article discusses the dynamics of ethnic and cultural identity. It is noted that in Russia there is a dual specificity of this process. In one case we are talking about the actualization of the all-Russian civil identity, with all its multiculturalism and poly-confessional. In another - about their own Russian identity, the search for new relevant grounds for the consolidation of state - and nation - forming people and the so-called “Russian world”. The complex structure of identity consists of three interrelated components: reflective, emotional and behavioural, form a stable synchronic horizontal, which defines the behavior and strategies of the members of the ethnocultural community. Tribal, ethnic and national identity forms a diachronic vertical. Thus, it is noted the existence of stable regularities are important for understanding the mechanisms of the dynamics of ethnic and cultural identity on the contemporary stage: in every new historical stage there is no cancellation, and partial transformation, adaptation, and synthesis of traditional and urgent (priority) identification of bases.
