In this study, the author used a research method that combines historical analysis and data anal-ysis, examines the impact of traditional gender norms of be-havior in two social environments – education and the labour market – in terms of gender participation in the educational process, distribution of occupations and family responsibilities. The data analysed in the article are mainly taken from statistics published by Rosstat, the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, statistical re-ports published by the National Research University Higher School of Economics, and other empirical studies. In the article, the author combines the data with a detailed ana-lytical study of the multidimensional evolution of gender differences in education and the labour market in Russia. The role of the gender division of labour and dominant social norms in shaping the socialization of gender differ-ences is revealed, and the complex underlying mechanisms of the relationship between superficial gender equality and hidden barriers are elaborated. The article answers the question of how the education system exacerbates gender inequality through hidden mechanisms and suggests a possible way to overcome hidden gender barriers in Russian society, providing a theoretical framework for promoting equitable social development.
