The category of irreality is a debated topic in modern linguistics. Linguists define its essence and boundaries in various ways. In Russian, the category of irreality is expressed through grammatical and lexical means, one of which is modal words. This article examines modal words that express irreality in Russian and Persian, focusing on the grammatical and semantic features of modal words with hypothetical meaning and their comparison in both languages. The analysis reveals significant differences as well as important similarities in how grammatical categories are expressed in Russian and Persian, reflecting the unique linguistic worldviews and cultural-historical development of each language. The research findings have substantial potential for application in three main areas: comparative-typological studies, cross-linguistic translation practice, and the development of educational programs for Russian and Persian. This study explores the expression of hypothetical and unreal situations in Russian and Persian, providing insights that can enhance translation quality and help avoid common errors. Additionally, the work highlights the connection between linguistic structures and the cultural thought patterns of native speakers in both languages.
