The creation of the federal service of National Guard troops, the complexity of tasks and conditions of their performance actualize some “traditional” tasks of military institutes and to prepare graduates capable of and ready for continuing professional self-education is among them. However, the analysis of common practice and surveys conducted in military high schools show that this task is not paid much attention to as most instructors and commanders of cadet units believe that the ability to learn is in our nature and needn’t to be developed. This article is an attempt to solve the problem by developing a model that could change the current practice and provide focused and systematic work on forming the readiness of students to professional self-education. Review of scientific literature on the concepts of “readiness”, “professional self”, “readiness for professional self-education” was made and the practice of formation of readiness for professional self-education in cadets was studied by observations and surveys. The subjects of the process of formation of readiness for professional self-education, their goals, tasks and acti-vities performed were defined. Using survey methods and mathematical statistics we calculated the levels of formation of readiness for professional self-education. As a result, the readiness for professional self-education is defined as a core competence, that a graduate should have. The model of the readiness for professional self-education that includes a set of interrelated elements is described. The model was tested in an experimental study in 2015-2016 and put into practice at the Saratov Military Institute of the National Guard troops. The experimental data prove the use of its high performance.
