The main purpose of the article is to analyze the main strategies for the participation of the state and society in the modern process of globalization. The authors proceed from the idea that at the current stage of civilizational development, the interdependence of the countries of the world reaches such a high level that no state and society can exclude itself from the process of globalization. However, the strategy of participation in the process of globalization is different for States and societies. National leaders define this strategy in accordance with the parameters of economic, political, and cultural potential that these states and societies have at the time of choice. Some national leaders choose the strategy of openness because it provides access to new resources. The strategy of close-ness, or containment, is chosen by those national political leaders who believe that openness to globalization flows can destabilize the country due to the low competitiveness of local institutions. Unique strategies of participation in the process of globalization are characteristic of the so-called “transitive states and societies”, including modern Russia
