Modeling of volumetric parameters of sunflower seeds

Seed size parameters of sunflower of different varieties and hybrids bred at V.S. Pustovoit All-Russian Research Institute of Oil Crops were studied to research the initial breeding material for the development of hybrid combinations of large-seeded confectionery sunflower. As a result, a mathematical model was proposed that allows a relatively high accuracy in determining the volume of seeds according to the known dimensions: length, width and thickness. The simulation is based on the assumption of a seed representation as a sum of two geometric bodies: a semi-ellipsoid and a cone. Evaluation of the model adequacy according to the Nesh-Sutcliffe criterion of modeling efficiency (NSE = 0.959) revealed its sufficient degree of reliability for practical use and the possibility of its wide application for calculation of volumetric parameters of sunflower seeds of different shapes and sizes.
