Innovative economy of Russia needs improved education system due to the rapid development of science and technology. On the other hand, a breakthrough in the economic development of Russia needs specialists with creative mindset. Therefore, the system of higher education adopted educational standards for a new generation, based on the competence approaches, ensuring the formation of qualities and abilities that enhance the competitiveness of graduates in labor markets. The article focuses on the modular-competence method of teaching students for their work in food industry. This method of learning is relevant in the context of the introduced Federal State Educational Standards since it implies active learning enhancing the formation of general and professional competencies. We have developed a modular program of the course "Analytical chemistry and physical-chemical methods of analysis" and modular classes for this course, which is included in the basic disciplines of science and mathematics cycle, enhancing the formation of a set of professional competencies related to research activities. The study compares the results of training by using traditional methods and the modular-competent technology. Education using modular technology works differently - in the form of complex tasks, combining theory with practice.
