Motif of the Fate in the Kalmyk Fairy Tales
The motif of fate in the Kalmyk fairy tales examined here is most often encountered at the beginning of the plot, setting the scene. This motif in Kalmyk fairy tales reflects archaic notions of the hare as a celestial deity and patron spirit. Fairy tale texts depict the hare as a provider of offspring. The hare appears in the guise of an old woman, a man, but most often, an old man. The hare’s location is in the direction of sunrise. The older generation travels to the hare on foot, while the younger generation travels on horseback. In tales based on the plot of ATU 508, the hare is presented as the provider of an heir, and the son is ultimately born thanks to the advice of a novice manjik, whom the old petitioner meets along the way. After following all the instructions of this novice manjik, the couple has a child. In the analyzed fairy tale texts, the image of the creator – the spirit hare – is also hidden beneath the guise of the lama. This is evidenced by his dwelling – a fairytale white yurt-like dwelling without rope fastenings – characteristic of the dwelling of inhabitants of the other world. Based on his actions, the hare in the analyzed texts can be classified as a donor to the hero, according to V.Ya. Propp’s classification of characters. Note the instance where the hare’s image in the fairy tale text extends beyond the hero’s donor circle, expanding it with the actions of a helper and participating in the protagonist’s spatial movement. According to the text, the hare has power over the animal kingdom; wolves, as well as chthonic creatures (the almas women) and celestials (the thundering dragon – lu, who on earth takes the form of a helpless baby camel) are subordinate to him. Having power over them, the hare sends them to test the hero. Having completed the difficult tasks of the guardi an hare, the hero is granted a long and happy life. Analysis of the texts revealed that the motif of fate is revealed through the image of the hare, who acts as the hero’s giver and helper. The hare’s range of actions also includes testing the hero. The fairy tale texts examined reflect ideas about fate through the image of the hare. It should be noted, however, that the archaic image of the hare is replaced by later Buddhist characters.
