The article reviews the motive of memories as one of the main motives in the prose byA. Angarhayev. In his novel "Eternal Color" (1982), it plays an important part, reflecting the general trend in the literary process of the 1970-1980's and cementing the main author's plot. This motive, along with the motive of mental disorder, is a part of the general motive complex "loyalty to the family", which is stated primarily in the characters of the old heroes - the initiators of memories of the past. Analysis of the motive and its varieties (work of memory, guilt, the voice of a sick conscience) reveals the complex associative connection of those episodes of the novel that involve the reader in a tense dialogue with the author, in the heroes' search for the true values of life. The incompleteness of the detective intrigue inherent in the subjective memories of the heroes has an unexpected effect on the reader. The author's understatement is overcome by a whole system of binary oppositions, the contrast values of the motive of memories. It is revealed that the mental attraction of the heroes of the novel to the ancestral memory acquires the status of a universal property and is the result of an eternal search for the truth and meaning of human life. It is concluded that the motif of memories allows us to reach the author's plot, in spite of the absence of a distinct storyplot sequence and the increased discreteness of the narrative, caused by retrospective complication. In the framework of this conceptualization of the motive, we could also speak of its structure-forming function in the novel by A. Angarhayev.
