Summary Purpose. To explore radiological and morphological changes in muscles of the body in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) using multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT). Material and methods. An area, density and thickness of major body muscles that have an impact on spine function were studied in 37 patients (16 - 36 years old) with AIS using MSCT. Results. Changes in muscles detected with MSCT of spine were dependent on the size of the curve and dominating localization. The greater the curve, the more considerable changes were observed in asymmetry of density and area measurements with maximum values noted at the level of apical vertebrae. Decrease in length of m. iliopsoas on the concave side and thickness on the convex side was noted. Conclusion. Changes in muscles detected in AIS patients with MSCT of the spine (asymmetry in muscle length, thickness and density on the convex and concaves side, fibrous and fat degeneration) are associated with the magnitude and level of the curve. These parameters are a part of symptomocomplex of scoliosis that must be considered in evaluation of the severity of the curve and preoperative planning.
