The article reveals the main milestones of the biography of a prominent Russian teacher of the second half of the XIX – early XX centuries Nikolai Vladimirovich Chekhov (1865–1947). It tells about Chekhov's student years and his participation in the university scientific and literary society. The teacher is shown as an educator and organizer of folk schools, including Sunday schools. His views on the development of the national education system and pedagogical science are characterized. The content of his activities during the Soviet period is revealed. The assessment of N. V. Chekhov's personality by contemporaries, including A. I. Kondakov, a graduate student from Vyatka, is given.
