The beginning of modernism in music: Nietzsche and Wagner

This article seeks to identify the cause of modernism in the work of the German composer Richard Wagner. On the basis of declared O. Spengler and Fr. Nietzsche signs of modernism we designated the similarities and contradictions in the aesthetic views of Wagner and Nietzsche, which marked the beginning of modernism in music and the concept of «Gesamtkunstwerk» - new art form - a musical drama. Special attention is paid for analysis of musical drama. Thus, the system of coordinates aesthetic offered Nietzsche and Spengler, allows us to understand the role played by Wagner in the formation of this direction, spiritual palette origin of modernism in music
