Abnormal acid-base balance of blood can frequently lead to complications following cardiopulmonary bypass surgery in children with congenital heart disease in the early postoperative period. Cardiopulmonary bypass affects an organism's oxygen balance. This influence is not related to the physiological circulation system and is accompanied by the occurrence of abnormal areas in the microvasculature. Hemodilution resulting from extracorporeal circulation leads to reduced oxygen supply. All these factors might give rise to various abnormalities of the metabolic profile.
