The article reveals the importance of the successful passage of the adaptation period for the professional formation of a young teacher. The necessity of organizing a scientific system of activities to ensure the successful adaptation of novice teachers in the general education organization is proved. The characteristics of traditional and innovative forms of work with this category of teachers during the adaptation period is presented. Particular attention is paid to mentoring as an effective form of systematic individualized interaction between more experienced and young teachers, allowing to solve the problems of personal and career development of novice teachers and their successful adaptation in the general education organization. The features of mentoring in in the field of education are disclosed. The requirements for the mentor's personality, as well as models of mentoring activities, are presented. Challenges to the effective functioning of mentoring have been identified and grouped together. Conditions contributing to the effective organization and implementation of mentoring in the general education organization are formulated.
