The travel sketches “Frigate “Pallada”” written by. A. Goncharov incited deep and genuine interest in the reading public of the time. The author of travel sketches paid special attention to the description of the new lexicon, which helped to determine unusual cultural phenomena of places he visited during his travel. A. Goncharov employs four ways of representing such lexicon: 1) the detailed encyclopedic description; 2) the description is built into the main narrative line; 3) the intra text interpretation; 4) the explanation isn’t given at all, the word meaning becomes clear through context. Given that, the choice of the way representing the unknown word depends on the task, which the word is designated to carry out. Therefore, in “exotic” chapters, Goncharov favors the first two options as they give the chance to describe the subject of nomination in detail. In “Siberian” chapters, the description is built into the narrative line and is realized in the form of a dialogue between the author and a skilled interlocutor. Intra text interpretation and graphically marked lexical units also have special significance. Their meaning is derived through context. The last two ways of representation are also essential for the sea lexicon explanation. Goncharov’s detailed research of the unknown and little-known lexicon demonstrates how deeply the author is convicted about the fact that no cultural exchange is possible without acquisition of special lexicon describing subjects, objects, and phenomena of foreign cultures.
