Some characteristics of Japanese funeral poetry

The article is about ancient and medieval Japanese funeral songs. The main attention is paid to the one of the earliest images ofpoetic theme of grief and sorrow - the image of birds. The article discusses in details names of birds, descriptions of literary devices transmit their flight and voices and its symbolic meanings. The author explains the cause of this image in Japanese funeral poetry and shows its transformation.
