New Approaches to Studying the Morphological Composition of Municipal Solid Waste

This article is devoted to a comparative analysis of methods for studying the morphological composition of municipal solid waste (MSW) and the application of modern methodology for determining the component composition of MSW using the example of an urban district and rural settlements. The paper examines the evolution of methodologies, identifies three main stages and analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. A study of the morphological composition of bulky waste and MSW (excluding bulky waste) collected from urban districts and rural settlements was conducted following modern methodology. The research results are presented in tables reflecting the average component composition of MSW (excluding bulky waste) and bulky waste for the urban district and rural settlements. Analysis of the obtained data showed differences in waste composition between the urban district and rural settlements. In the waste of the urban district, the component content of polymers and glass is higher, while in rural settlements the share of non-recyclable waste is greater. The average composition of processed MSW was determined taking into account the mass ratio of bulky waste and MSW (without bulky waste) based on information from the regional operator.
