"New atheism" in Germany and the reaction to it: a general overview

Бесплатный доступ

«New Atheism», originally an Anglo-American phenomenon, has become increasingly widespread in recent years in other countries as well. The religious situation in Germany is characterized by close cooperation of the state with traditional churches (Catholic and Evangelical) on a wide range of socially significant issues. However, in addition to translating the works of the new «classics», atheistic books by German authors (including those for children) are published, and a number of atheist organizations regularly conduct anti-religious public activities. Christian theology seeks to provide answers to these new challenges, making its traditional arguments relevant and seeking a dialogue with the natural sciences, philosophy, psychology and culturology. The article reviews the main monographs and scientific collections devoted to replying to the arguments of New Atheism. Their wide spectrum shows that the attacks on traditional Christianity can also become an important impulse for a new articulation of the church’s message, which seeks to be understandable to modern people
