After World War II, the concept of patriotism was taboo in Germany. Nevertheless, studies prove an increase in the level of German pride in relation to their national identity. Themes related to nation and nationality are no longer relevant today in connection with the issue of the alienation of one nationality from all others, but in the light of society's orientation towards new constitutional values (constitutional patriotism). National identity and patriotism are no longer associated with the concept of “ethnicity”. The aim of this paper is to examine patriotic feelings in different segments of the population of the Federal Republic of Germany in the context of national identity formation. The novelty of the study lies in the fact that the impact of the “East German identity” on the identity of modern Germans is declining; the author also notes an increase in patriotism among Germans with a migration background as they continue to “Germanize”. As a result, the patriotism of today’s German inhabitants is based on the facts and achievements of the post-war period, which strengthens the German national identity without negative connotations.
