Efficient operation of power units largely depends on accuracy of determining their technical condition. Testing of engine functional state without disassembling is a promising direction in maintenance system. The list of key requirements for in-place methods includes simplicity, quality, as well as reliability, speed and minimization of procurement costs, including installation and disassembly of equipment. Accuracy increase in testing of machine and tractor unit technical condition correlates with use of expensive diagnostic tools, which limits their widespread use. The conducted studies were based on literature review and subsequent analysis of in-place methods for technical condition determination of power unit piston cylinder. That made it possible to elicit application peculiarities, identify their positive and negative aspects and create a basis for their improvement.
