The work of Alexander Fadeev, especially his novel “The Rout”, still attracts the attention of researchers; literary criticism sometimes refers to the novel “Young Guard”, although until recently it seemed that Fadeev’s artistic heritage could be of little interest to anyone. Meanwhile, another novel of the writer - “Razliv” - is now outside the zone of philological attention. In the article, this novel becomes the object of study; more precisely, a specific characteristic of one of the characters in this novel is considered. The peculiarity of this characteristic is that it is given in the form of laconic formulas that enter into systemic relations with each other. In “Razliv” there are quite a lot of characters that create a very ramified and complex character system; the characteristics of the heroes are structurally diverse, from very brief to extremely detailed. The considered characteristic of the character, the priest Timofey, stands out not only for its brevity, but also for the fact that the elements that make it up are formulaic in nature. Each such formula is a short phrase, in which one or another facet of the character is presented laconically, and at the same time deeply and figuratively. The formulas related to Father Timofey are found several times throughout the novel, and their system contributes to the development of the character’s characteristics and the deepening of the author’s assessment of him as the action progresses; through the formulas, the character’s characteristics become quite voluminous, but do not lose their formulaic nature, creating a kind of paradox of combining laconism and depth, external brevity and internal development. And such a system of laconic formulaic characteristics of the hero contributes to the reconstruction of the author’s ideas about a person, about what he should be like and what he should not be like, and from this one can draw a conclusion about the author’s ideas about the world. The formulaic nature, due to its laconism, allows for a special emotional impact on the reader.
