The paper attempts to assess the current state of small business in Russia on the part of the conditions of its conduct and the intervention of state structures. For many years, the Russian economy has been facing with the problem of supporting small businesses. Various ways of stimulating entrepreneurship at different levels of government are proposed and adopted, and the possibility of supporting business is seen as a solution to a number of social and economic issues, which makes this problem one of the most relevant. Based on an analysis of the well-known data of the Russian Public Opinion Research Center and the Federal Tax Service and the results of the author's sociological research among managers and employees of small businesses in the region, it was found that most entrepreneurs assess the business environment as unfavorable, and administrative and other barriers that are most important for conducting current business and starting a business are identified. In general, the author notes the desire of small businesses to autonomy of their own development and calls the question of the need to support the development of small businesses unresolved, which primarily relates to government intervention.
