On the language and style of biblical translations of Vassily Zhukovsky

The article considers the language and style of the New Testament translated by Vassily Zhukovsky. It was carried out in comparison with the style of translation of «Odyssey». The vocabulary and relation to other New Testament translations have been analyzed. It was concluded that the main stylistic trends of translation was a tendency to increase the tone, which is realized on the lexical, grammatical, and on syntactic level. The reason for this is seen in the effort of Zhukovsky to carry out synthesis of poetry and prose which is expressed in both aesthetic and also theological views of the poet.
