In the article, we reflect on the future of criminology in the context of the present and past of this science and academic discipline. Criminological thinking is understood as a type of intellectual activity aimed at solving a certain class of mental problems of modern criminal policy on the basis of criminological knowledge and with consideration to the basic criminological patterns, the ability to choose an appropriate strategy to combat crime and evaluate its efficiency. In our opinion, criminological thinking in modern conditions should go beyond professional legal thinking, since it concerns vital aspects of the life of the individual, society and state, and, accordingly, should have an adapted character. New approaches to understanding the content and characteristics of criminological thinking will allow us to move away from its repressiveness and extensive methods in its development to intensive ones. We believe that the development of criminological thinking in law students, criminologists, law enforcement officers and other subjects can become one of the components that will make a difference in the future of criminology.
