The plots and motives of etiological myths, explaining the origin and characteristics of various animals (animals, birds, insects), are considered. The etiological myths of the Kalmyks describe not only the origin of the features of the appearance of a particular animal, but also the relationship between them. The heroes of the etiological myths of the Kalmyks are the swallow, the magic bird Khan Garudi, the rooster, the peacock, the snake and the mosquito, performing the various functions in the text of the myth.
