This article examines the sociolinguistic features of urban languages in Germany at the phonetic level. The great languages of modern times persist in the diaspora and in combination with others in multilingualism in the presence of compact ethnic groups. Throughout their millennia-long history, cities have been characterized by exceptional linguistic diversity Urban languages can differ from other forms of language existence as well as from literary language at all linguistic levels: phonological, grammatical, syntactic, lexical, and idiomatic. Within the framework of the activities of Professor A.D. Petrenko's scientific school of sociophonetics and phonolinguistics, special attention is paid to the variability of speech at the phonological and phonetic levels. Consideration of some pronunciation peculiarities of the inhabitants of large German cities shows that the study of exceptional linguistic diversity of large cities provides an opportunity to study the possible impact of these linguistic variants on the literary norm in the future
