The essay represents the author's view on the main trends of the British literature development in the 1980s - 2000s. The main stress is done at the dynamics of novel in the national literary system of the time. The author argues about some central paradigms of the contemporary English novel development: realism and postmodernism, post-colonialism and multicultur-alism, history and the past, culture both as subject and object of literary reconstruction of life, self-understanding and self-determination of a human being in the contexts of the time. Some novels of Martin Amis, Graham Swift and Hanif Kureishi are under special attention.
