On a new translation of "Crime and punishment"

In this article, first presented at the International Congress of Translators in Moscow, 2012, Oliver Ready reflects on his experience of (re)translating Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. He discusses why he set about doing so in the first place and how he defined his approach, before going on to consider some of the specific problems of translation raised by this text, especially by its curiously limited lexical range and use of repetition. Oliver Ready's translation is shortly to be published in Penguin Classics.
