The paper analyzes the issue of reproduction of characters’ direct speech with pronounced deviations from the literary norm during the translation of a literary work from English into Russian. The research is performed on the material of several novels, both classic and modern. Two major questions are raised, with the first one considering the ways of reproduction of such speech in translation and the second one questioning the very necessity of such reproduction. The article discusses the importance of characters’ speech in terms of the ways it forms these characters’ image. Another aspect considered in the article is the role which the characters’ speech plays in causing a certain effect on a reader. All this leads to the conclusion that reproduction of the characters’ speech in the translation is very important. At the same time, it’s obvious that it is impossible to develop some general way which would allow a translator to reproduce deviated speech quickly and efficiently every time. For that matter, each case of reproduction of deviated speech requires an individual approach. Consequently, learning and mastering such approach should be an essential part of the training of future translators.
