The article examines the linguistic means of representing the problems of socio-cultural adaptation of foreign students studying in Russia. The object of the study is the linguistic actualization of the desire to receive education in the Russian Federation, the problems associated with the organization of this process, and the perception of the host country. The research material is the reactions of respondents obtained in 2023 during the survey and a free associative experiment. Sample of informants: 42 people aged 18 to 26 years participated in our study. The overwhelming majority are 21-22-year-old informants. 57.1 % are girls; 42.9 % are young people. National composition: 24 informants are Turkmen students (57 %); 13 Uzbeks (31 %); one person each (2.4 %) from Kazakhstan, China, Madi, Tajikistan, Afghanistan. The main idea of the study is that international students, especially in the early stages, are one of the most vulnerable groups of students, since their adaptation process is determined by other cultural realities, the new society. The education system is the most accessible social institution that can ensure the integration of foreign students into a new socio-cultural space, however, socio-cultural adaptation is not always successful. Most often, it is a multidimensional long-term process complicated by cultural differences, isolation and deprivation in all spheres of life. Statements that the modern policy of Russian universities is focused on ensuring a favorable socio-psychological adaptation of foreign students, taking into account their cultural, individual, psychological characteristics, and the system of ethnic values, sometimes remain only statements.
