The article deals with the opinions of the linguists about the category of the perfect tenses. There is emphasized the significance of the category of taxis for the definition of the semantics and the functions of the perfect tenses. There is paid special attention to the explanation of the usage of the forms of the past perfect while transforming the complex sentence from the direct into indirect speech.
