The article aims to identify the specific characteristics of phonemes in the Russian and Buryat languages that have systemic linguistic significance, as well as differences that are not phonematically significant but still disrupt speech aesthetics and create accents. This goal was set with the hope that the article can be useful to researchers of the Buryat language as well as educators teaching the Buryat language to non-native speakers. The author concludes that sounds in different languages can have similarities, but they can also differ in terms of vocal and noise participation, moving and passive speech organs, occlusive or slit sound origin, etc. The article provides a description of the action of the vowel harmony law, which dictates the pronunciation of consonants and the choice of vowels depending on their hardness or softness, as well as different pronunciation shades of the same sounds depending on their place and manner of formation. Similar sounds in the Buryat and Russian languages can differ articulatory, in terms of reduction, nasality, affrication, aspiration, greater or lesser degree of vibrancy, etc.
