“Updating the vocabulary space”: new additions to the dictionary of pragmatic markers of Russian everyday speech

The article provides an overview of the most recent linguistic studies (2023–2025), which use voluminous corpus material to examine a number of “intermediate” units of the Russian everyday discourse: svoego roda, v svoyem rode, v nekotorom rode, poluchayetsya, (nu) naprimer da (?), kak skazat’ / ili kak skazat’, kak budto (by). All these units occupy an intermediate position between signifi cant units of language and lexically emptied, purely pragmatic units of oral discourse. They combine the properties of multi-level units: (1) lexical-grammatical units (fullfl edged signifi cant words), (2) discursive units (discursive words or discursive markers), which are mostly the result of the grammaticalization process, and (3) pragmatic markers formed in this capacity under the infl uence of the pragmaticalization process. The sources of material for the analysis were three speech corpora: (1) the corpus of Russian everyday communication One Speech Day, (2) the corpus of Russian monologue speech Balanced Annotated Text Library, and (3) the oral subcorpus of the Russian National Corpus. The analysis carried out in all cases gives grounds to recognize the units under consideration as potential pragmatic markers (similar to real pragmatic markers due to their usage automatism and the ability to verbalize the speaker’s diffi culties during speech production or their reaction to the very act of such speech production) and to set the task of expanding and “updating the vocabulary space” of the recently published dictionary of pragmatic markers of Russian everyday speech (2021).
