The educational potential of a literary club in learning a foreign language in non-linguistic universities

The problem of the need to optimize the methodology of teaching professional foreign languages in non-linguistic universities in the context of a reduction in teaching hours and low student motivation is considered. The results of a study conducted at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation (Altai branch) on the integration of literary club meetings held in English into the educational process are analyzed. The features of selecting literary works for reading, their discussion and elaboration within the framework of literary club meetings are shown. The high educational potential of using English-language novels as material for the effective development of economic concepts and English terms that verbalize them has been verified. An increase in the preservation of the studied material by an average of 30 percent compared to methods of studying a professional foreign language using material of an exclusively educational nature indicates the high educational potential of using a literary club in teaching students of economic universities a professional foreign language (English). The methodology has been tested on the material of the English language; the presence of a sufficient number of authentic works of art, the action of which is closely related to economic realities, can allow it to be scaled up for the study of other foreign languages.
