General Characteristics of the Reading Culture of Book Club Members

The study examines the significance of a developed reading culture for society. It is emphasized that reading culture is not merely the ability to read and comprehend texts, but rather a complex system of values, knowledge, and skills associated with the perception, analysis, interpretation, and application of the information read. This culture encompasses a love of reading, a need for books, critical thinking, the capacity for reflection, and the ability to apply acquired knowledge across various spheres of life. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of current statistical data regarding the prevalence of reading in Russia and the popularity of book clubs. A survey was conducted with the aim of forming an understanding of the reading preferences of participants and organizers of book clubs, in order to test the hypothesis that they exhibit characteristics of a developed reading culture. The results of the survey demonstrated that book club members perceive reading not merely as a form of entertainment, but as a means of self-development, broadening one’s horizons, and acquiring new knowledge. In conclusion, the study dwells upon the fact that book clubs serve as a distinctive platform for intellectual communication, where like-minded individuals can find companionship and friendship, thus facilitating the promotion of reading culture.
