Education of the Chinese in the USA and «boxer indemnity»

Бесплатный доступ

At the late XIXth - early XXth century the Chinese authorities arranged for their students to be sent abroad to study at foreign educational institutions. The acquired theoretical knowledge and practical skills were meant to be used in the interests of implementing reforms in the various fields of imperial life including national education. The United States was very attractive for the Qing administration in terms of educational opportunities and the first groups of Chinese students were sent there as early as in the 1870s. The article focuses on the scholarship program for Chinese students to be educated in the United States in the early XXth century, which was funded from the so-called «Boxer indemnity» that China was obliged to pay to foreign powers after the Boxer rebellion.
