The hypothesis of the study is based on determining the expediency in assessing the purpose of assets to choose indicators characterizing the financial condition of organizations in different phases of the economic cycle. The study revealed that assets of commercial organizations measure the value of the organization's business turnover; characterize the accumulated potential; help in achieving sustainable capital formation; protect against the risk of liquidity loss by highly liquid assets exceeding the minimum mark, guaranteeing the safety margin of equity; influence the level of risky; and assess its financial condition. A methodological toolkit for assessing the functional purpose of assets has been developed, which assumes the distribution of financial indicators characterizing the functional role of assets in different phases of the economic cycle taking into account the professional judgment of specialists.
