The purpose and methods of studying the effectiveness of the USE as a tool for selecting students to universities from the point of view of cognitive psychology, a number of research tasks, and research are presented. It is concluded that the mental scheme used in the USE is focused on the formation of a faceted (“mosaic”) type of thinking in students, does not contribute to successful learning at a university, leads to the emergence of severe cognitive dissonance, and causes stress and depression in students. Approaches to change this situation are proposed.
