The article traces the stages of the intercultural dialogue between East and West. The author emphasizes that, as a rule, the influence of the East on Western European art is emphasized, but dialogue always implies a two-way relationship characterized by varying degrees of intensity and a change of roles in the “transmitting - receiving” pair. The first contacts of Western European and Eastern cultures date back to the turn of the XVI - XVII centuries, but the dialogue did not happen during this period due to the fundamental difference in socio-cultural paradigms. But communication was not interrupted, it was continued, which led to the end of the XVIII - early XIX centuries. to the emergence of interest in foreign cultural experience. The processes of its assimilation by the national art schools of China and Japan are in many ways similar: the division of artists into traditionalists who advocated the preservation of the canon that had been forming for a long time within the framework of national art, and supporters of Western painting who tried to assimilate both approaches in their work. In conclusion, the author emphasizes that by the beginning of the twentieth century. some isolation of China and especially Japan from the global cultural trends has been overcome, and the work of the masters of these countries becomes part of a single artistic space.
