Throughout the Edo period, Holland was an agent of European knowledge for Japan. Even though from the end of the period Japan began to establish diplomatic contacts with other Western countries, Holland continued to play an important role for it. The article deals with the description of Holland in «Yochi shiryaku» («A brief description of world geography»), a geographical work which would become one of the best-sellers in the Meiji era, written by a Japanese scholar Uchida Masao (1839-1876).
