The article formulates a concept of psychological adaptation as a dynamic system consisting of hierarchical levels representing the primary and the secondary adaptive abilities. The results of the empirical study concerned with the adaptive skills of pupils of a children''s home are reviewed in the paper. The author establishes a correlation between the psychological characteristics and the psychological adaptation of the children''s home inmates.
