Purpose. This paper shares the results of the field experience gained by students majoring in rock art during the 2017 Minusinsk Rock Art Research Expedition of IAET SB RAS. Such a type of educational practice was used to tailor a special educational program for the students, which was one of the important tasks of the expedition aimed at solving one of topical problems in rock art studies, namely a shortage of skilled young researchers. The problem is not an easy one to solve as even specialized educational programs provided by NSU and designed specifically for archaeologists at the Bachelor's or Master's levels fail to guarantee development of students' professional skills. On the one hand, we don't need many specialists in petroglyphs and paintings studies but a few qualified persons; on the other hand, the art of studying petroglyphs is a very particular field of archaeology with the main difficulty in obtaining field work skills. We believe that it is a scientific advisor who is responsible for the quality of knowledge and skills of young rock art researchers, and it is up to the scientific advisor to organize a summer school for his/her students. This paper demonstrates some educational perspectives of individual and collective studies of students within the framework of field rock art research. Results. The experience of conducting a rock art summer school for students shows that such a format is effective enough for developing their field skills and highly stimulates scientific search and motivation of the students. It also develops the idea of joint research and forms certain skills of teamwork and sharing, which are very important for modern multidisciplinary investigations. Conclusion. Based on the analysis of the present-day situation, as well as the possibilities and perspectives of our educational system at university, we conclude that the only solution for the problem of having skilled young researchers is the activities of the students' scientific advisor. An important step is to organize a special summer school for a group of motivated students, which has demonstrated its efficiency.
