Project-based learning is regarded as a method best suited to the development of professional competence within the competency-based approach. The paper identifies that independent research and internship as chosen by students are the basic forms of traditional curriculum-based learning that help implement the project method. The authors present the key requirements for the project to be carried out while learning: integrated nature, focus on the solution of a specific large-scale problem, integrative knowledge, skills, and abilities acquired during classic classes (lectures, seminars, workshops). The study describes the teaching and organizational techniques that generate students' motivation for their involvement in the project, develop their independent engineering thinking, mobilize their knowledge, provide self-reflection, and increase the number of students' publications.
