The article is devoted to the conditions providing successful formation of communicative competence at English lessons in a departmental institute of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia. The contents of the communicative competence as well as forms and methods required to the process of forming the competence are revealed. The structure corresponding to the institute profile «regime and guard» is presented.
