Introduction. The organizational mechanism for managing the law enforcement officer’s career is considered as a key element of the work carried out by the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs to preserve and develop the professional personnel core. Materials, Results and Discussion. The career development process is studied, including the selection, appointment, rotation, training and evaluation phases. The authors reveal systemic problems that hinder the effective functioning of the mechanism, such as formalization of procedures, lack of objectivity in evaluation, limited horizontal growth. Conclusions. The structural components of the career management mechanism of law enforcement officers are detailed. It is stated that the effective functioning of the management mechanism is hampered by a number of barriers. Measures are proposed to optimize the mechanism of managing law enforcement officer’s career.
