The scribe and drawing-artist Gavrila Basov's art of ornamentation (the last quarter of the 16th - the beginning of 17th century)

The article is devoted to the study of ornamental headpieces made by the drawing-artist Gavrila Basov. The authors applying the element-structural method reveal the features of the master's art samples by comparing them to ornament old-printed style of the early sources. It is established that the origins of Gavrila's work date back to the “Large uppercase alphabet” by Dutch artist and engraver of the 15th century Israhel van Meckenem and the Moscow first-printed books of the 16th - early 17th centuries.The authors revealed the compositional motifs and elements applied by the artist, which he borrowed and processed in his headpieces of handwritten books. The compositions of the master's authorship are colorful and highly decorative, which indicates his high professional skill.
