The domestic pedagogical literature contains many interpretations of the basic question of pedagogy, the solution of which is impossible without a broad historical and pedagogical context. The article presents the author's version of the approach to the definition of the main issue of pedagogy, the solution of which is important for understanding the pedagogical reality throughout the evolution of human society in various epochs, cultures and civilizations.
