The author, based on a wide range of sources, analyzes the main trends in the natural movement of the population of the Samara region during such a difficult period for the country as the «wild nineties». The natural movement of the region’s population and its migration growth were noticeable in the first half of the 1990s. The author determined that indicators of both fertility and mortality of the population of the Samara region were consistent with similar data for Russia as a whole. At the same time, a significant increase in population occurred due to migration, which compensated for the natural population decline. When the number of migrants decreases in the second half of the 90s, the population of the Samara region began to decline. The author put forward a number of reasonable assumptions regarding the causes of the current situation.
